No More Excuses

Even though you have heard the “I can’t draw” excuses, kids don’t have to say that anymore.  Of course some kids may have tried time and time again, but the final outcome is not what they really like.  This however does not have to be too discouraging.  Different from freehand drawing, stencil art templates are pre-drawn    outlines and are widely available.  In fact, they are quite cheap.

Additionally, children who do not have the artistic talent, or a tablet will be happy with the gift of stencil crafts.  Certainly these put smiles on faces.  Even kids with the artistic talent and those with the tablet will welcome Things That Kids Can Draw With Stencil Art.

 Faces

Undoubtedly, little kiddos love drawing faces.  Surely, it is one of their favorite way to express their creative thoughts about the family.  Usually toddlers start with the basic circle and then they add eyes.  After all, as they get older they add more details to the face.

On the other hand, older kids are more accurate with their drawings.  Forthwith their art work has more details.  Remember though that they can get frustrated if their drawing does not look like what they think it should be.  Again, Things That Kids Can Draw With Stencil Art can help.

The video below shows an example of an easy art draw and may come in handy to ease a child’s frustration.

One good thing about stenciling is that you may reuse a drawing template for stencil when you want to have the same design, letters or numbers.  Remove them from your work surface and clean them after using paint.  In that way, they stay intact.

 Animal Stencil Patterns

Of course if you and your kids are crazy about animals, then you can check out the many free printable animal stencils available here.  You can choose from the wild jungle animals to the tame farm animals, from the marine animals to the pre-historic dinosaurs, from the beloved dogs and cats that love to cuddle on the floor to the very popular black cat stencil for halloween.

Albeit, here are some favorite animals.  Children can draw the outlines, then complete the drawing by adding a few details.  Likewise, they can paint, color or just shade them with lead pencil.  Truly the end result is always admirable pieces of art.

If kids continue to practice drawing simple stencil designs, there is no doubt that their artistic skills will be strengthened and they will make progress.

My hope is that kids exposure to the many drawing templates will give them the confidence to draw a variety of things that are of interest.  Children should practice until they are comfortable with their drawings.

I recently introduced my 4 year old daughter to the idea of stencils and it was really hard for her. She’s a lefty – not sure if that makes a difference – and she found it really hard to hold down the stencil AND color in or trace the shapes. Any tips on how to get her to figure out how to use them properly? She wasn’t thrilled with them, and I’d really love her to enjoy making art with them!
Just a question – I wasn’t sure what you meant with the reference to tablets… are there tablet-style stencils?

I know that being left handed can be challenging for young kids. It may be even more so for them to use stencils for drawing, if left handed. You may want to introduce drawing stencils to them later when they show readiness.

When working with young kids of this age, I always tape the stencil firmly to the paper, so that it doesn’t shift. You may want to try doing so, and assist your daughter with the hand over hand method working from left to right.

For practice and encouragement providing everyday objects for her is a good start. As she draws patterns from left to right, the habit of working from left to right will be reinforced. As she gets older, stencils may be introduced.

These days there are left hand friendly school supplies designed specially for kids and you can set up their work space so that it accommodates their writing/drawing activities.

During my research, I came across some websites that offer help for parents with left handed kids. I bookmarked a few, so you may check these out:

      https://www.leftyslefthanded.com

They offer supplies designed exclusively for Leftys by Random Arts made by a small company in Texas.

With the tablets, I was referring to the fact that there are tablets that support drawing. If you would like to check these out for your daughter, you may try Amazon. They sell a variety of drawing tablets for kids.

Believe it or not, when I was a kid, I never had the chance to use drawing stencils. Now that I’m seeing this post as an adult, I just realised how much fun I have missed when I was a kid!

The butterfly stencil patterns look really beautiful, and it shows that we can be very creative when using stencils. I know that this article is directed at kids, but do you think it would be weird if adults are also interested in using drawing stencils? Lol!

    Great article!

Very helpful. I just bookmarked your site so I can go back and apply your tips as I encourage my child to try to draw. It’s true that sometimes, kids could get frustrated when they’re attempting something new. He might get interested especially in the animal stencil patterns. Other patterns could be stuff related to space. You know how much little boys love rocket ships, planets, stars, etc. Thank you for this post.

Drawing stencils for boys like the space related ones are available too.
